Go Slashdot!
Its going to be a busy day, but I have to comment on this...
As a good techie, Slashdot is part of my daily reading. For years and years Slashdot has been (and continues to be) the definitive community-driven news-blog that allows all of its readers to bring forward any external news topic that "they think" is particularly relevant to the Slashdot community (aka the nerd-demographic).
The benefits are two-fold. 1) you get a nice comprehensive daily offering of news headlines (and links to the source material) that you can easily decide what you care to read more about; and 2) you have the option to further read the collective wisdom of the slashdot readers as they candidly vent, rant and wax-scatologically (..and sometimes philosophically).
...A word of caution though... the Slashdot forums can be the "Mos Eisley space port" of the internet, so first time readers should wear a cup and keep a blaster at their side. - lol (sorry, that was too fun not to write that in)
Ok, back to the blog...
I tell you all that to tell you this:
Sometimes I wonder if I should be getting my news from more "traditional" sources, but then something unfolds (that I will explain in a second) and I know that I am right where I belong... Slashdot is the best way for me to stay on top of things - news-wise.
This just happened today:
Completely unknown to me, and hot off today's press, the "New York Times" runs a story in its science section with the headline: "The Fight Over NASA’s Future" (fyi: this is close home for me as I am one of those whose job will be affected by the outcome). But I don't read the NYTimes, per-say, so I would not get to read this ordinarily.
At 9:15AM, today (Tuesday December 30) Slashdot user: "CmdrTaco",
alerts readers to this article tagged under: NASA (go figure)
As expected, a nice debate among Slashdot readers erupts and opinions are flying everwhere...
At 9:40AM, Slashdot user: "Shivetya" comments that the interdependence of politics, , votes, NASA-funding and the countries space-agenda are not well-represented in the NYTimes article.
and then - lol - get this....
At 10:10am, Slashdot user: "jswatz" who just so happens to be the author of the NYTimes articles weighs-in in defense of his piece - how cool is that.
At ~11:00am - I roll out of bed (hey - I'm on vacation) and grab a cup of coffee and pop-open my laptop and start doing my morning reading... and viola! this has all happened in real-time and is waiting for me to enjoy.
What? What's the point of this blog, you ask? ....I dunno.
