"Why People Care", A Strange Political Song

Hi. My name is Rich... and I'm an NPR-aholic. Happily, this is not a bad thing (says I). For those of you who don't know, NPR is "National Public Radio" and before you roll your eyes and hit the back button on your browser..... please... no really... please... listen-up...

If you have, like me, for one reason or another, taken stock and found yourself emotionally exhausted here at the end of the 2008 presidential election process; weather you are elated or deflated about the outcome and either way don't know if you can continue to follow the our worlds current events with the same earnest interest you have had up til now... I have to tell you about something I listened to on NPR on Tuesday that gave me pause and compelled me to write this blog in order to share it with you.

It's not anything decidedly deep or philosophical. It's just a short (7 min) radio bit that NPR put together to showcase a genuine cross-section of the American public's passion for the democratic process. Its basically a random sequence of very candid, american political confessions which are woven together with a very humorous folk song. The effect it had on me was that it perfectly illuminated the idea that those of us who truly care about democracy (and don't secretly wish we were dictators) are part of a wonderful fellowship that transcends our views on all the issues. We are united in our love of democracy and not along any other ideological lines. It was a feel good moment for me.

You should find the time (7 mins) to listen to it yourself at:

This is the part that resonated the most with me... listen for it:
"I am perfectly willing to die for your right to believe that which you believe, but I will fight you to the death and I will see you in hell, before I will allow you to impose your beliefs upon me and mine. ... and that's an essential element of liberty." --- heard on NPRs "Hearing Voices" aired Nov. 4th 2008

Let me know if ya like it! :-)

Oh... as I end this, I have to say... just for the record... I am convinced that both candidates were good choices, there was no "bad" outcome. I also believe that America made the best over-all decision by electing Obama. Yup, I have been an Obama supporter since the spring of `07. ...I think I'll blog about that next....
